A suggestion for Tumblr: Try to figure out a way so spammers can’t use this black-hat SEO (search engine optimization) technique. It’s dead simple to take advantage of, and as a result, some sites (such as our own) often drown in it. Today, for example, we got a ton of fake traffic from bots doing an obscure search on Google (see screenshots). Here’s a quick explanation as to what’s happening, as far as we can see:

  • first Black hat SEO types hit Google and type in this specific phrase — “site:tumblr.com ‘liked this’” — a common phrase on Tumblr due to the way it handles likes.
  • then Then, sketchy bot types will create hundreds or thousands of fake Tumblr accounts whose URLs forward to a sketchy-looking site not on Tumblr.
  • result These sites end up getting hundreds or thousands of backlinks to their sketchy sites on Google — and all they had to do was like tons of people.

» But we have a temporary solution: Are you, like us, getting a lot of spam on your Tumblr? This is a likely reason. We’d like to offer a suggestion to solve the problem. If you know how to edit your theme in HTML, do a search for the phrase “{PostNotes}” and replace it with this: ”<!—googleoff: all—>{PostNotes}<!—googleon: all—>”. This prevents the notes from getting crawled by Google, which is good because it focuses your content, but bad, because any relevant content in reblogs won’t account for what shows up in search engines. This is really a problem Tumblr needs to look at — if they take out common phrases or make them invisible to search engines, everyone wins. But we hope this at least helps your sanity. It’ll help ours.

New Tumblr “Like” Feature
You can now “like” a post in your Tumblr Dashboard without having to reblog it.  I “like” it.
Update: Apparently not everyone can see the heart button just yet.  I imagine Tumblr is rolling this feature out now… be patient :)

Let’s try this again. I don’t know why the OP was deleted. All I have is this excerpt from when I tried to reblog it, but the original is gone gone gone. I really hope this doesn’t mess up anybody who liked the OP to keep track of it. I will try and find a place on the layout to paste this bit of…

Reblogging the contest entry for a quick announcement:

In the original rules (the ones that disappeared mysteriously off of tumblr), I stated that one should avoid spoilers. When I rewrote the rules, I decided to allow spoilers because I figured I could use the “Read More” tag. But I realized a major flaw in that logic. Because voting will be up to all of you out there, people who make art with spoilers might not stand as good of a chance of winning against those who do not include spoilers in their art. Not everybody is going to want to click a spoiler filled image.

While I am not going to ban images with spoilers, I would like to advise you all to keep this in mind while creating your entries. Someone who hasn’t finished the books is much less likely to even see your picture let alone vote for it.

Thanks, guys! Sorry about that! I’m not sleeping much lately, so I am not thinking things through, lol.

Go enter! And keep it TV watcher friendly :) I’ve submitted, I hope it went allright

Okay, I’ve seen this image going around for a few weeks and I would like to weigh in.
One fundamental misconception of the #Occupy movement is that it is anti-corporations (and therefor, thanks to decades of successful messaging from business interests, anti-American). By and large, “down with corporations” is not the rallying cry of the movement. While the movement is too broad for any characterization to be applied without moving some to the margins, the general sentiment is against the corporate role in government and the effects of this involvement (eg. legislation tailored to a small percentage of what is putatively a democracy, a lack of accountability for those with financial power). Few want Nikon, Sony, J. Crew, etc. to fail, they just want them to operate within our government and our economy in ways that benefit to totality of the population. Business thriving is important to everybody, but the rewards should be more evenly distributed and the welfare of the workforce that allows business to thrive, through labor and through purchase, should not be gambled. Nothing in this image is hypocritical; people who are not in the executive class work at all these corporations, whose salaries and benefits would be the first casualties of a boycott or anything so broad and stupid. Most of the protesters are organizing against greed, corruption, disenfranchisement and ignorance, not against corporations.
